A step counter. That's it. No badges, no streaks, no confetti — just your steps as a massive number on a black screen. Data, not motivation.

Challenge

Every step counter ships the same playbook: badges, streak animations, guilt-trip notifications, and a dashboard fighting for attention. STEPPPS is a bet on the opposite — that the people who walk every day don't want to be motivated, they want to be informed. The challenge was designing an app radical enough in its restraint to stand out, while still being technically serious about the thing it does: counting accurately, everywhere, all the time.

Solution

We gave STEPPPS a brutalist identity and an interface reduced to its essence — one massive number on a black screen. Underneath the restraint is real engineering: reliable background step tracking, walk mapping built on Mapbox, and home and lock screen widgets so the number is visible without ever opening the app. An over-the-air update pipeline through EAS lets releases ship continuously, and the landing site carries the same voice: a step counter, that's it.
